Minimum Authentication on Meta and Google: Protect Instagram and Facebook

You don't need to be a cybersecurity expert to prevent 80% of Instagram and Facebook compromises. Meta and Google offer free controls few businesses configure properly. This is the minimum checklist before delegating access to a team.

Meta checklist (Instagram + Facebook)

  1. Two-factor authentication with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy) — SMS as backup, not sole factor.
  2. Updated recovery email with a unique, strong password.
  3. Monthly review of active sessions at accountscenter.meta.com.
  4. Trusted contacts configured for account recovery.
  5. Third-party apps: revoke anything unrecognized.
  6. Page roles: Editor vs Admin — grant least privilege.

Google checklist (linked email)

  1. Two-factor authentication enabled at myaccount.google.com/security.
  2. Passkeys where your device supports them.
  3. Sign-in alerts on new devices.
  4. Review «Your devices» and sign out obsolete equipment.
  5. Don't use personal email as the only business recovery address.
Strong authentication on the recovery email protects more accounts than any other single measure.

For teams and agencies

Avoid sharing one Instagram password among five people. Use Business Manager, granular roles, and a log of who has access. When someone leaves the company, revoke access the same day.

Managing multiple brands? Centralize authentication policies. At Devson Labs we audit Meta/Google configurations and document a baseline for your operation.
